show understanding of underlying meaning of a text and how it is conveyed. Reveal means employed by author to achieve certain effect on reader.

In order to show central idea of a text, examine:

  • central idea/ message
  • style/ register (e.g. neutral, formal, colloquial, slang, ...)
  • tone (e.g. emotional, objective)
  • rhetorical devices/ stylistic devices and name them (e.g. comparison, contrast, repitition, imagery, etc...)

for literary texts:

  • narrative technique(s) (e.g. pov., made of presentation)

for non-literary texts:

  • structure of text (e.g. order and nature of paragraphs, subjeadings, topic sentences, complexity of sentences, graphics)

  • important to distinguish between non-fictional and fiction texts and to decide which features are typical for the text
  • Main goal: explain how and why the author uses different means to make their point and explain effect on reader
