Individual and Society

Social Class

  • Social class: grouping of people according to social & economic status → lower-, middle- and upper class
  • Social inequality: unequal opportunities between classes
  • Social mobility: term used when individual, family or group moves up or down in social hierarchy
  • American: Social mobility in American Dream
    • Rags to Riches
    • However: gap between poor and rich has widened since 1970s because of economic downturn
    • More difficult for poor people to move up and for people in middle class harder to stay

Gender Equality

Optimist View

  • Sociologists say that there has been so much progress, that there are more women than men in workforce → in 2009 temporarily more women than men in workforce
  • UK: 1992 = 37% → 46% = today
  • due to economic recession where kmostly men's jobs have been made redundant
  • 2012 survey in some US-Areas between ages of 25-60, 53% of women made more money than men

Pessimist View

  • Women are a minority in most parliaments
  • 484 of 500 CEOs in USA are men
  • Despite progress, women continue to do most housework & childcare ("traditional" tasks for women)
  • Worst of all: women are still the victims of sexual abuse and rape
