History

  • 1493: Columbus discovering America and making it accessible to England/ Britain
  • 1600 and after: European colonists arriving → countries: France, England, Spain, Netherlands
  • 1770s: 13 british colonies on norhteastern coast → still dependent on England
  • 1775 - 1783: revolutionary war against dependency to britain → resulting in committe of the "Founding Fathers" that declared Americas independence on the 4th of July in 1776
  • 1787: guidelines for constitution written
  • 1789: first US-President George Washington

American Dream

  • Set of beliefs and ideas, so that every American has the possibility to prosper and advance socially and financially through hard work
  • Individual interpretations

  • Has been a big pull factor for the USA
    • Social dream of equality and opportunity
    • Political dream of democracy and justice
    • Personal dream of freedom and self realisation
  • While for many the American Dream is still alive, for others it's just an illusion or has even turned into a nightmare
